Elliptical machines & Cross trainers

A cross trainer, also known as an elliptical machine, is a type of fitness equipment that simulates the motions of running or walking without the impact on the joints. Ellipticals have a base that the user stands on, and two handles that the user grasps for balance. The user moves their legs back and forth in a circular motion, similar to running or walking, while the machine's pedals move in a circular motion.

Ellipticals provide a low-impact cardio workout that is easy on the joints, making them a good option for people who are recovering from an injury or who have joint problems. They can also be an effective tool for burning calories and losing weight, building endurance and muscle mass, and improving cardiovascular fitness.

Elliptical machines come in different models, some with more advanced features like adjustable resistance, preset workout programs, and heart rate monitors. Some ellipticals come with a moving arms feature, allowing for a total body workout.

Ellipticals offer several benefits from cardiovascular fitness to muscle strength to weight loss:

• Cardiovascular fitness: elliptical trainers provide a low-impact cardio workout that can increase heart rate and improve cardiovascular health.
• Muscle strength: the pedalling motion and resistance level of ellipticals work the legs, glutes, and core, and with the handlebars, users can also work on the upper body
  muscles as well.
• Weight loss: using an elliptical can help burn calories, which can lead to weight loss if done regularly and in combination with a healthy diet.
• Low Impact: elliptical trainers are low-impact, which means they put less stress on the joints than running or other high-impact exercises. This makes them a good option for people with knee or joint pain.
• Convenience: ellipticals are easy to use, and can be found in most gyms or can be purchased for home use. They also offer a variety of workout programs and resistance levels to keep workouts interesting and challenging.

When looking to buy an elliptical machine for home use, there are a few key features to consider:

• Resistance levels: get an elliptical machine with adjustable resistance levels, so that you can increase the difficulty of your workout as you get stronger.

• Stride length: The stride length is the distance between the pedals, make sure that it is comfortable for you and that it fits your height and size.

• Handlebars: Some elliptical machines have moving handlebars, which can provide a more complete upper body workout.

• Display and workout programs: browse crosstrainers with a clear and easy-to-read display, as well as a variety of workout programs to keep your workouts interesting.

• Durability and stability: Make sure the elliptical trainer you choose is built with high-quality materials and has a sturdy frame to ensure durability and stability during use.

• Noise: The noise level is an important factor to consider if you are planning to use your elliptical machine early in the morning or late at night.

• Size and Storage: You should consider the size of the elliptical machine and if it will fit in your space and if it has a compact design for easy storage in case it's needed.

The elliptical cross trainer is an excellent cardio machine because it provides a low-impact cardiovascular workout that can be beneficial for people of all fitness levels. To lose weight with an elliptical trainer, you should aim to create a calorie deficit by burning more calories than you consume. Here are a few tips to help you do that:

• Increase the intensity of your workout. By increasing the resistance level or incline of the cross trainer, you can burn more calories in the same amount of time.
• Increase the duration of your workout. The longer you exercise on the elliptical, the more calories you will burn.
• Incorporate interval training. Alternate between high-intensity and low-intensity periods during your workout to boost your calorie burn.
• Track your progress. Use a fitness tracker or an app to track your progress and monitor your calorie burn.

It's important to note that weight loss is not just about exercise, diet plays a major role too. Find the right balance of exercise and diet that works for you. Consult a healthcare professional for more personalised advice.

Using an elliptical trainer at home is relatively simple and straightforward. Here are the basic steps to follow:

• First, adjust the elliptical machine to fit your body size and preferences. This may include adjusting the stride length, resistance level, and incline.
• Next, step onto the cross-trainer and place your feet on the pedals. Make sure you are standing in the centre of the elliptical machine and that your feet are securely placed on the pedals.
• Hold onto the handlebars for balance, and begin your stride. Start with a low resistance level and a slow pace, and gradually increase the intensity as you become more comfortable.
• Keep your posture straight, engage your core, and use your arms and legs in a smooth and natural motion.
• Keep an eye on the elliptical trainer's display to monitor your progress, including distance, calories burned, and heart rate.
• When finished, step off the cross trainer and wipe it down with a damp cloth.

It's important to have a proper warm-up and cool-down before and after your workout, respectively. Also, it's always recommended to start with lower resistance and gradually increase it. It's always a good idea to consult fitness guides or an expert before using the elliptical machine.
